Course Requirements: Music

Audio/Video Ministry

This course is an overview of these departments of ministry with emphasis upon how to operate an efficient program, what equipment to buy, how to design a sound system that best meets your needs, etc. These are very valuable ministries which every church will need to establish.


Practical Music Theory 1

This course is designed for those who already have a basic understanding of the rudiments of music. We will build on that foundation with a study of chords and how they apply to various aspects of praise and worship. Also, a major emphasis will be placed on ear training. We will also study analysis, modulation, basic improvisation, and how all this applies to praise and worship.


Theory 2 and Basic Songwriting

We will cover many of the creative tools and foundational structures necessary for both congregational praise and worship, and solo/group oriented songwriting. Touching briefly on basic instrumentation and arranging concepts, what instruments to use and song formatting, we will discover the simple techniques that help bring your music to life. We will also develop and critique songs and arrangements from conception to completion. Working carefully and creatively on lyrics and message conveyance, we will learn the vast literary/musical palette available to the dedicated writer, whether advanced or beginner.


Theory 3 and Songwriting 2

A Continuation of the principles from Theory II and Basic Songwriting.


Theory 4 and Arranging

Conducting 1 / Rhythm Section

The purpose of this course is to enable the prospective minister of Fine Arts to be able to start and conduct worship teams, choirs of all ages, orchestra/band, and gain a general understanding of rhythm and flow in conducting.


Conducting 2 / Choir and Orchestra

A continuation of the principles taught in Conducting I.


Leading Praise and Worship / Platform Etiquette

The purpose of this course is to enable the prospective minister of Fine Arts to be able to start and conduct worship teams, choirs of all ages, orchestra/band, and gain a general understanding of rhythm and flow in conducting.


Leading Praise and Worship 2

A continuation of the principles taught in Leading Praise and Worship.


Patterns of Godliness

This inspirational and instructional class is designed to exhort the students to live a dedicated and godly life by using numerous Bible personalities as our examples. The instructor will lead you into a study of both well-known and obscure individuals, revealing the principles we can learn from their lives. These classes will also familiarize you with the basics of the study of “types, shadows, and symbols” in both the Old and New Testaments.


Platform Communication

Learn how to skillfully communicate with your musicians, vocalists, audio personnel, rhythm section, and choir on transitions and modulations while directing the flow in the corporate worship service.


Music Ministry Administration

This course is designed to help you, as a person, fulfill the calling of music minister by focusing on what the Word of God has to say about your private life as well as your public responsibilities. Topics will include moral ethics, financial responsibility, and your home life, as well as your public role of minister, conductor and worship leader. Stewardship of work, play, rest and worship will be discussed.
